Today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity. "I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, to keep his commandments, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. But if you turn away and do not listen, but turn aside and bow down to other gods and serve them, I testify to you today that you will surely perish; you will not long remain in the land you are entering to possess, after you have crossed the Jordan. I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today; I set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice, and holding fast to him. For this is your life, and the length of your sojourn in the land the LORD swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give it." RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4, and 6 (R.: cf. Ps 40 [39], 5a) Happy is the man who trusts in the Lord Happy is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked, † does not walk in the way of sinners * or sits in the company of the scornful, but delights in the law of the Lord * and meditates on it day and night. He is like a tree planted by flowing waters, * which yields its fruit in its season. His leaf does not wither, * and everything he does prospers. Sinners, on the other hand, * are like chaff that the wind drives away. For the way of the righteous is known to the Lord, * but the way of the wicked is perished. SINGING BEFORE THE GOSPEL Cf. Mt 4:17 Glory to You, Word of God The Lord says: Repent, The kingdom of heaven is near. Glory to You, Word of God GOSPEL Lk 9:22-25 Whoever loses their life for my sake will save it. Jesus said to his disciples: "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised." Then he said to everyone: "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and then loses or forfeits himself?"
