The LZB caution order demands a high degree of discipline and situational awareness from the locomotive driver. While fundamentally quite simple, it offers the potential for colossal errors. Why is this? Put simply, as a train driver operating under display-guided control, one is accustomed to adjusting one's driving style according to the control parameters. With the LZB caution order, the system denies this familiar guidance in several ways. 1) The LZB simply makes the explicit indication that a caution order is being processed disappear. The LM V40 may, under certain circumstances (non-CE), go out as soon as the train has passed the last switch in the route of the block section where the order begins. Or, on CE lines, at the block section following the start of the order. 2) The LZB may, under certain circumstances, permit premature travel at speeds exceeding 40 km/h. For the LZB, the caution order always ends at the block section following the start of the order, regardless of whether a block marker or a main signal is located there. 3) After passing a block signal, even if it is the correct one, the LZB (train control system) does not take into account the required 400 meters for increasing the target speed. The train driver must therefore be able to correctly assess the situation and determine the appropriate course of action. The basic principle is: Once the LZB caution command has been acknowledged, the train driver must determine the position of the train's front end to be permitted to proceed at sight. Using the timetable information, the starting block signal must be identified. Then, starting from that point, the next block signal equipped with a main signal is determined. No LZB block signal! Now, quickly add the 400 meters required for proceeding at this block signal (note the direction of counting!) and remember this information, or better yet, write it down. Until reaching this point, proceed at sight regardless of the displayed control signals! In this way, the LZB caution command can be executed without operational hazards.
