This beautiful IBM unit was given to me by my father when I was a child. He would bring back electronic things from work that didn't work. Already as a kid I was passionate about taking things apart and trying to repair them. I failed at this one, but I found it again in the attic when I last visited my parents, and I brought it back. It's even more beautiful than I remembered! It was introduced in 1961, and is creatively named an IBM Executary 214 (from "Executive Secretary" maybe?). It records on a 4" band instead of a tape, which makes the various recordings instantly accessible without any rewinding. Very clever. It's beautifully constructed, all metal, IBM gray paint, blue trim and chrome. You could put it next to my IBM 029 keypunch or our CHM IBM 1401 computer and it would fit in perfectly. This particular model was put in service in 1965, if we are to believe the note found inside. The inside note from 1965 also says it didn't work. Indeed, this machine looks absolutely new, had nothing recorded on the tape, and might never have been used because of its malfunction. Will we be able to repair it?
