The paradox of our genome is that humans have only about 20,000 genes, no more than a tiny microscopic worm, and yet our enormous complexity comes from how those genes are combined and read. We are all mutants and living graveyards of ancient viruses. What separates us from our closest primate relatives is not the appearance of hundreds of new genes, but changes in the timing of old genes. Our second chromosome was born from the fusion of two ape chromosomes, and although we share about 99% of our DNA with chimpanzees, small changes in brain development gave us a longer childhood, neuroplasticity, and an extraordinary ability to learn. Behind all of this is Richard Dawkins’s unsettling but fundamental idea of the “selfish gene”: organisms are temporary biomachines created to preserve and copy molecules that behave as if they want to conquer the future by using our bodies as vehicles. There are even Darwinian conflicts inside us, including between the X and Y chromosomes. And if genes are so selfish, then altruism, friendship, and sacrifice exist because helping relatives or cooperating with others can be an effective evolutionary strategy, reinforced by emotions such as guilt, gratitude, and loyalty. Evolution is not only a tree of vertical inheritance, but also a global network of horizontal gene transfer between bacteria, animals, and viruses, responsible both for antibiotic-resistant superbugs and for major biological innovations in the past. In the end, life is a universal information process: wherever information can be copied with errors, natural selection can produce order out of chaos.
