Trump Top Adviser Downplays Trade War with China
(9 Apr 2018) President Donald Trumps new chief of the White House National Economic Council played up the strength of the U.S. economy and denied there is a trade war with China in remarks to reporters outside the White House. "No tariffs have been enacted, okay? And discussions are ongoing," said Larry Kudlow, the president's new economic adviser said. "That's not a trade war." Trump has said that Washington and Beijing can settle their tariff dispute but Kudlow, has previously said that a "coalition of the willing" - including Canada, much of Europe and Australia - was being formed to pressure China. Kudlow earlier said while Washington hoped to avoid taking action, Trump "was not bluffing." Beijing and Washington have threatened to raise tariffs on $50 billion worth of each other's goods. Trump said the U.S. list might be increased by an additional $100 billion of goods, which prompted China's government to say it would "counterattack with great strength." "There are discussions going on between the two parties," Kudlow said to reporters. "So, this is the first round of a process," he said. "China will move in the right direction because it's the right thing to do," he said. "They know that, the whole world knows that. I think fact that President Trump said that is a really positive, important thing."
