Ukraine as a state began with Kyivan Rus. Then, in the 10-11th centuries, the Old Rus state, the population of which was mostly Orthodox, reached its peak. However, the Mongol invasion of 1240 destroyed not only Kyiv but also altered the whole map of Eastern Europe. The continuation of Ukrainian statehood was the Principality of Galicia–Volhynia, which existed for 150 years. In 1349, the medieval Rus state declined.
