Tripper Getem - AtariJaguar - 4MB ROM for Atari Jaguar console

Q: So what is this? A: Well, it's a ROM file run it and see for yourselves! Q: How do I run it? A: Gah, c'mon people it's not rocket science! (quote (c) CJ) Flash it on your Skunkboard or flash cart, run it on Virtual Jaguar or Project Tempest, burn it into (E)PROMS and make a cart out of it... the choices are various! http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/... Q: Ok, I manged to see it... LOLWut? A: Well, a bit of background. shthree found the song a couple of days ago and when we heard it, we declared that this song HAS to go on a ROM for the Jaguar. The song is about 3 minutes 34 seconds long, so we had to come up with a way to reduce its size so it'd fit on a 4MB ROM. Then GGN remembered of Mikael Kalms (of TBL game) and his ADPCM encoder/decoder released under Creative Commons 3.0 license* (which is pretty close to what we used to refer to as "Public Domain" back in the '90s). We then converted the song down to a Jaguar friendly frequency (we chose 20774Hz) and fed it to the encoder, which crunched it down to over 2mb. So what to do with almost 2mb to spare? Initially we were thinking of bolting the audio decoder + replay routine to qUaKe (http://reboot.atari.org/new-reboot/qU...) and display a few pictures that were relevant to the lyrics. But pretty soon it was apparent that we wanted tighter sync than the BPEG decoder could give so we decided to ditch that idea and use 320x240x8bpp pictures and code a tiny sequencer around this. After this was done, it was a simple matter to add pictures and sync them to the song (yeah, right :P). We used the free program for Windows, Wavosaur, that can export markers as sample positions, so we could hear the song and add sync points easier. grab the full package from http://code.google.com/p/unitedstates... as we only included the 68000 decoder which was modified for ROM usage (i.e. no init parts whatsoever) Q: You bored me. I want to bash this production. The sound is screechy. How could you???? A: Awwww did we break your little heart, dear? We'd have LOVED to use a higher quality decoder, but we didn't have $500 so we could run a competition for someone to code us one :(. This Youtube version uses the original mp3 form Tripper's mix tape. Q: The graphics are low resolution and don't have enough colours. How could you???? A: The graphics are unpacked and in ROM so we can flick between them effortlessly and really fast. Again, we didn't have $500 so we could run another compo in which someone would come up with a BPEG decoder that could run in less than 0.02 seconds. Sorry :(. Q: You used other people's code AGAIN? Are you going to write something of your own ever? A: Run along and play dear, we had our fun and wanted to share with the world. We all know GPU in main si teh futar, but until teh futar is here you'll have to make do with this. Q: Again WTFPL? A: Yyyyyyes, your point being? Q: You're using the F-word again? Have you no shame??? A: Errrrrrrrrr, no. We like that license, so deal with it! Q: Can I have more features? A: (See the qUaKe readme for more details) Patches welcome.
