The 13 year old girl was travelling on a Jerusalem city commuter bus, packed with high school students and soldiers, when it was blown up by a Palestinian suicide bomber on board. The assailant set off the explosives in the middle of the bus at about 7:10 am (0510 GMT) as it was stopped in Jerusalem's residential Kiryat Menachem neighborhood, police said. Eleven people were killed and at least 48 wounded, eight of them very seriously, authorities said. Israeli police identified the bomber as Nael Abu Hilail, 22. Ismail Abu Shanab, a leader of the Islamic militant Hamas group, said that Israel could expect a violent response if Palestinians were killed, but he stopped short of claiming responsibility on behalf of Hamas. The Arab satellite TV station Al Jazeera later said the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the militant Hamas group, claimed responsibility, although this has not been confirmed.
