US trade officials says China has failed to comply with WTO rules on steel exports

(13 Jan 2014) The US wants to know why China is not in compliance with a WTO ruling on high tech steel exports. The WTO ruled that the Chinese were imposing unusually high duties and restrictions on US exports of GOES, or grain oriented flat rolled electrical steel. Through the WTO, the United States is asking why China is not in compliance with the ruling and continues to impose high tariffs and duties on GOES steel. "The United States today is challenging China's failure to comply with the WTO's decision in favour of the United States in our dispute on high tech steel," US Trade Representative Michael Froman said at a news briefing on Monday. "Specifically, we've requested consultations with China on its failure to bring anti-dumping and countervailing duties on exports of GOES - grain oriented flat rolled electrical steel - into compliance with its WTO obligations." Froman added that the US "was right and China was wrong." "The WTO found that China's duties are inconsistent with WTO rules. And, unfortunately, it appears that China has not corrected those inconsistencies," he said. China has 15 days to respond to the WTO regarding the charges by the United States. The office of the United States Trade Representative estimates US producers lost nearly 250 (m) million dollars in sales as a result of China's actions.
