SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): Li Weiyi, Spokesman of State Council Taiwan Affairs Office of China: "This report (proposed by Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian on Taiwan's security) systematically explains Chen Shui-bian's idea of Taiwan independence and is a wanton assault and slander to the mainland. This report is intended to drive a wedge between people across the straits and provoke conflicts between the two sides. This reports shows that the Taiwan leader still stubbornly clings to his wrong position of Taiwan independence and continues to implement the radical policy of Taiwan independence, and intends to sabotage the peace and stability across the straits. Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's intention is fully revealed in the report and he is trying to mislead the public and distract the public attention from social and economic issues in Taiwan." 4. Reporter 5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): Li Weiyi, Spokesman of State Council Taiwan Affairs Office of China: "We notice that the report was criticised by the public in Taiwan once it was released. This shows that Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's position to promote Taiwan independence and create tension between the two sides goes against the will of Taiwan's people. The actions and measures from Chen Shui-bian and his administration are not favoured by the Taiwan people. " 6. Wide shot of journalist asking question 7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): Yang Zhanke, director of China Company of Purchasing and Marketing: "We hope we (the fruits purchasing delegation organised by the mainland government) can make the trip to the southern part of Taiwan to purchase fruits as soon as possible. We are willing to do so and we are looking forward to that. We believe that fruits from Taiwan will enjoy a better future in the mainland as the exchange between the two sides expands." 8. Wide of news conference STORYLINE: China lashed out against a Taiwanese security report depicting China as a threat on Wednesday, condemning the document as a provocation by Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian to foment conflict between the rivals. In the 155-page report published on May 20, Taiwan listed ways it says China is threatening it and proposed a demilitarised zone with the mainland. The two sides split in 1949 during civil war. Beijing still claims the self-governed island as its territory and has threatened to use force if it formalises its de facto independence. "This report is intended to drive a wedge between people across the (Taiwan) straits and provoke conflicts between the two sides," Li Weiyi, a spokesman for the Chinese Cabinet's Taiwan Affairs Office, told reporters at a news conference in Beijing. "This report shows that the Taiwan leader still stubbornly clings to his wrong position of Taiwan independence ... and intends to sabotage the peace and stability across the straits," he said. The report also proposed ways to reduce military tension by establishing a neutral area where no military planes or ships would enter without first notifying the other side. The area should also be free of missiles, said the report, which was released to coincide with Chen's sixth anniversary in office. Taiwan says China is pointing hundreds of missiles at the island and adding a hundred new ones each year. Exchanges of information about military drills and independent supervision of military contacts were also mentioned in the report. Li said the report was a "wanton assault and slander to the mainland."
