With the speed of light, no cloud of dust and a hearty, hi ho, silver livery, Chelmsford City Council's new rocket-assisted street cleaner zips along mean streets like a Lambo. To speed it up the Silver Surfer, propulsion experts from the National Association of Skunkwork Agencies (NASA) have fitted two JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) rockets when it needs to move up a gear. We asked the City dirt-busters for a demonstration with and without the JATO and here is our exclusive video, after all, the Street Cleansing Service is responsible for keeping over 1,300 kilometres of highway clean and litter free, so there is no time to waste. At a flick of a Back to the Future switch, the Zippy took off down New Street like a bat out of hell, leaving no stone unwashed. Street cleansing is the removal of grit, mud, litter, grease, debris and leaf fall from adopted highways. SCS special agents routinely sweep adopted roads and foot ways in the Chelmsford area and carry out the following . . . *Daily early morning litter clearance of the city centre, Moulsham Street and Duke Street *Seven day a week litter picking and litter bin emptying in the city *Sweeping and litter picks all other roads and footways on a needs basis *Yearly jet washing the paved pedestrianised area of the city centre and the adopted paved centre of South Woodham Ferrers to remove chewing gum deposits *Washing and cleaning of subways *Removal of dead animals from adopted highways, footways and public open spaces.
