(20 Jul 2010) HEADLINE: Protesters disrupt meeting over 'resegregation' NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOTLIST CAPTION: A group of protesters upset over a North Carolina school board's decision to eliminate a busing policy focused on diversity has been arrested for disrupting the board's meeting. (July 20) POLICE ARREST SEVERAL PROTESTORS AT A NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. THE ACTION IN FRONT OF THE WAKE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD CAPPED A DAY OF RALLIES. ABOUT A THOUSAND PEOPLE MARCHED THROUGH NORTH CAROLINA'S CAPITAL TUESDAY, IN A DISPLAY REMINISCENT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERA. (NATS OF RALLY) THE DEMONSTRATION CAME BEFORE A SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TO CONSIDER A MOVE PROTESTORS SAY WILL RESEGREGATE SCHOOLS BY ELIMINATING A BUSING POLICY FOCUSED ON DIVERSITY. (SOT: Rev. Nancy Petty, one of "Raleigh 4" arrested for sit-in at school board meeting June 15.) (4:46) say no to predjudice. No to racism. And no to inequality in our schools. And we are here to say yes to diversity in our schools. THE WAKE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD HAS VOTED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS TO SCRAP THE DISTRICT'S DIVERSITY POLICY. THAT POLICY DISTRIBUTED STUDENTS BASED ON SOCIOECONOMICS. IT HAD BEEN A MODEL FOR OTHER DISTRICTS LOOKING TO BALANCE DIVERSITY IN SCHOOLS. SEVERAL SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED LAST YEAR HAVE BUILT A MAJORITY IN FAVOR OF FOCUSING ON NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS. (SOT: john Tedesco, Wake County School Board member.) (6:12) to look at somebody by the color of their skin or the amount of money in their mom and dad's pocket and say you can't go to this school or you can go to this school, seems inherently unfair to me. OPPONENTS BELIEVE THE NEW POLICY WILL RESEGREGATE SCHOOLS. (SOT: Kalan Ingram, 16, black, rising junior at Richmond High School.) (5:55) it's important because we need to know what it's like in the outside world. The outside world is diverse. (SOT: Taylor Burnham, 12, white, of Raleigh.) (6:05) we should all go to school together. It's not fair just because we're different colors. We shouldn't be treated differently. IIT'S A FIGHT THAT'S ALL TOO FAMILIAR FOR FORMER FREEDOM RIDER GEORGE BLACKWELL. (SOT: George L. Blackwell, 83, Williamston, NC. Veteran of the freedom rides and march on Washington.) (2:59) We cannot afford to go backwards. We must continue to go forward, until all minds are made up and set that we must live together or we perish together. BEFORE THE MEETING, POLICE ARRESTED THE HEAD OF NORTH CAROLINA'S NCAAP. REV. WILLIAM BARBER HAD BEEN BANNED FROM TUESDAY'S MEETING AFTER BEING ARRESTED AT A JUNE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.
