Ukrainian woman in Poland determined to return home

(27 Feb 2022) Tens of thousands of Ukrainians fled to the borders on Sunday as invading Russian troops pressed on towards Kyiv. Some Ukrainians, however, made their way from neighboring countries to return to their homeland. Marta Uchatiuk was determined to cross the Medyka border crossing in Poland and return to her home in Sambir, Ukraine. "I am from Sambir in Ukraine, that is my homeland. Those (Russians) who came to my home came as occupants and they must leave", she said. Exhausted Ukrainians walked many miles through the night, while others fled by train, car or bus, forming long lines at border crossings. Some were greeted by waiting relatives and friends. Others headed to reception centers organized by neighboring governments. At least 368,000 people have fled Ukraine into Poland and other neighboring countries in the wake of the Russian invasion, the U.N. refugee agency, the UNHCR, said Sunday. Poland's border guards said some 156,000 people have entered from Ukraine since Thursday, when the invasion started.
