The genius is none other than Professor Layton. Apparently, Future Layton became obsessed with the idea of time travel, and this obsession eventually led to him turning evil and taking over the whole city. It also led to the creation of the time wormhole inside the clock shop. Layton and Future Luke decide the best thing to do is visit Future Layton.
