Protests breakout throughout world against Trump's Jerusalem move
"트럼프 선언은 미친 짓" 팔레스타인인 부글부글 Tensions have escalated quickly in the Middle East after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel... and intends to move the U.S. embassy there from Tel Aviv. Hwang Hojun reports. Rubber bullets, bullets, teargas and airstrikes shortly after the weekly Friday midday prayers. At least two protesters have been killed and around 300 injured in clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank. The "day of rage" protests erupted on Friday in reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. According to reports, while nuanced in different ways, both Israelis and Palestinians have condemned Trump's decision as inappropriate and unnecessarily stirring up a sensitive political and religious issue. Protests also broke out in other areas of the world, including Arab and Muslim nations such as Egypt, Turkey, Malaysia, an even in President Trump's own turf,... New York City. An emergency UN Security Council meeting was convened on Friday over Trump's announcement, where the U.S. was virtually left isolated, facing blunt criticism and rebukes from the 14 other council members. After the meeting adjourned, five EU members -- the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden -- released a joint statement on the matter. They denounced the decision saying it goes against the UNSC resolution and jeopardizes the chance for peace in the Middle East. However, besides voicing their frustration, it's unclear what they can do, as the U.S. is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council that can veto any resolution seeking to condemn President Trump's decision. The U.S. envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley in return accused the UN of being biased and bullying the U.S. and Israel. Hwang Hojun, Arirang News.
