A 'disgrace' to suggest the ABC needs more money, when the wider media is 'bleeding'

Sky News host Paul Murray says for Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese to argue in the parliament that the ABC needs more funding "when the rest of the media is bleeding so aggressively, is inappropriate". Due to the wide spread economic impact of coronavirus, many media organisations such as Channel Seven, NewsCorp, and Network Ten have lost their main source of revenue, advertising, and as such have been forced to cut jobs or cut pay. Mr Murray said it is "a disgrace" when many in the wider media industry are losing their jobs or taking massive pay cuts, there are some who argue the ABC - "who will have no change to their jobs" - should get further funding. On Wednesday Mr Albanese requested the Prime Minister to reverse the government's funding freeze on the ABC which saw the public broadcaster's funding frozen at the same annual rate for three years. Mr Murray continued by saying "people are losing their jobs through no fault of their own, through a complete erosion in the way the media pays for itself, advertising," but Mr Albanese is instead arguing "that an organisation that is guaranteed funding … deserve more money". "I don't want to see the ABC turned off, I don't want to see thousands of people sacked". Image: AP
