SOUNDBITE (English) Acting Israeli Public Security Minister Reuben Rivlin "Palestinian people along with the Islamic movement try to exploit and to do everything in order to create conflict between the Islamic people and the Jews. The Jewish people are commemorating the day of the 9th of Av which is a memorial for the destruction , to memorise the destruction of the Holy temple that was destroyed 2000 years ago. They are doing it for the last 2000 years. There was no provocation whatsoever from any side. Those people , the Jewish extremists didn't even mean to go into the holy temple, it was only a provocation from the Islamic side." 13. Wide shot acting Public Security Minister Reuben Rivlin STORYLINE: Israeli police Sunday entered the mosque compound that is Jerusalem's most contested religious site and fired stun grenades at Muslims who were throwing stones at Jews worshiping nearby. Fifteen policemen and seven Palestinians were injured inside the hilltop compound, the site where the current round of Israeli-Palestinian violence erupted 10 months ago during a similar confrontation. Hundreds of police entered the compound to pursue the Muslim stone throwers, while Jews praying at the Western Wall down below fled the barrage of rocks, with some holding plastic chairs above their heads for protection. Earlier Sunday, police blocked a small group of ultranationalist Jews who sought to march on the mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. The Jewish group, the "Temple Mount Faithful," wanted to plant a cornerstone for a future Jewish temple on the compound, the site of the two Jewish biblical temples. Two mosques, including the golden Dome of the Rock, now stand on the compound, atop the ruins of the ancient temples. Israeli police have for years prevented attempts by the ultra-orthodox Jewish group, called the Temple Mount Faithful, from entering the compound. This year the police were backed by a court order banning the group from entering the site. But the court injunction did allow the group to place the stone by Dunn Gate, which is historically the Jewish entrance to Temple Mount and passes through the old Jerusalem city walls. After the ceremony, the cornerstone was taken from the area in order not to provoke Arab anger. The Mufti of Jerusalem, Ikrema Sabri, who is the senior Muslim cleric in the region, called on Muslims to come to the compound in their thousands to prevent the ceremony. He called the laying of the cornerstone a direct provocation. Inside the compound, about 2,000 Muslim worshippers gathered to oppose any efforts by the group to break into the area. Ibrahim Sarsour, an Arab Israeli and leader of the Islamic Movement, warned that any radical Jew forcing his way onto the mosque compound would provoke a confrontation.
