In an interview held today, Ivan Nabisingura, a clinical Phycologist and Director Metanoia Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Kijuguta, Northern Division of Kabale municipality, emphasized the urgent need to address the growing mental health crisis among the youth population. He stated that they have observed a disturbing trend in recent years, with an increasing number of young individuals experiencing mental health challenges directly linked to the prevalence of drug abuse and alcoholism in community." Nabisingira noted that substance abuse not only poses immediate risks to physical and mental health but also leads to long-term psychological consequences adding that the use of drugs and excessive alcohol consumption often exacerbates conditions such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, making it crucial to tackle substance abuse as a primary intervention in improving mental health outcomes. Nabisingura further emphasized that addressing this challenge ultimately falls on the responsibility of parents in shaping the upbringing of their children. Nabisingura also adds that to combat on this challenge, they have resorted on comprehensive awareness campaigns, educational programs, and rehabilitation services aiming to inform the youth about the detrimental effects of substance abuse while providing accessible treatment options for those in need. He adds that this includes not only addressing the immediate concerns related to substance abuse but also promoting an environment where individuals feel supported and empowered to seek help when facing mental health challenges Speaking with Kabale District Health Officer, Dr. Gilbert Mateka, it has been revealed that the district has witnessed a significant increase in mental illnesses, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This surge is attributed to heightened levels of stress and a rise in drug and substance abuse cases. Dr. Gilbert Mateka has expressed his concern over this issue in the district, prompting the initiation of mental illness outreach programs. He also highlighted that some of these mental illnesses are relatively minor and not as severe, underlining the need for comprehensive mental health support and awareness efforts. The overarching aim of World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10th, is to raise global awareness about mental health issues and galvanize collective efforts to support mental health. This significant day provides a platform for stakeholders in the field of mental health to discuss their work and identify areas where further action is needed to make mental health care accessible and attainable for people worldwide.
