The first in a special series of contemplative lunchtime seminars for Passiontide and Holy Week. At each seminar, a different art historian and theologian focus on pictures from the National Gallery’s collection and explore themes of salvation, frailty, isolation, and sickness. In this first seminar, Professor Joanna Cannon (Courtauld Institute) and the Reverend Dr Jamie Hawkey (Westminster Abbey and Clare College, Cambridge) introduce a diptych of the Virgin and Child and Man of Sorrows by the artist known as The Master of the Borgo Crucifix. We hope you enjoy today's event. There is no charge, but please make a donation if you can. The Abbey receives no Church or State funding, and the drastic reduction in income cased by the covid pandemic puts our priceless heritage at risk. You can make a donation at www.westminster-abbey.org/support-us or text the word ABBEY5 to 70025 to give £5 (UK only).
