My Hula Hula Love 1911 & Hula Love 1957 - Jones & Murray - Buddy Knox

Here is Ada Jones & Billy Murray from 1911 Singing My Hula Hula Love, & Buddy Knox singing Hula Love from 1957. Was the 1957 hit "Hula Love", lifted from the 1911 song My Hula Hula Love composed by Percy Wenrich & Edward Madden? This question was pursued by Recorded Sound Historian and Grammy Award winner Tim Brooks who researched the two songs back in 1984. According to Brooks in an article from Goldmine in March of 1984, "Ascap had passed my letter of inquiry along to Remick Music. They and the heirs of Wenrich and Madden, stood entitled to all composer royalties from 1957 & 1965 hits of Hula Love. Ironically, Remick was then owned by Warner Bros., the Company that made the 1957 movie that featured the 1957 version of the song, and Warners presumably paid for the rights to use their own song in 1957. When I inquired of Remick several months later about what had happened, they would only say curtly that the matter had been settled out of court and "we do not feel we should authorize any further publicity in this." Brooks closed his 1984 article by saying, "Percy Wenrich and Edward Madden did not live to see their song become a hit among the rock generation. Both men died in 1952. But next time you're in a record store and see an LP of 1950's hits including "Hula Love", note the composer credits. Perhaps at last Wenrich & Madden will receive credit for a clever little song that appealed to record buyers of both the 1910's and the 1950's. "My Hula Hula Love".
