Today in this video, Dr. Supriya Puranik gives detailed information about whether IVF results in twins (benefits of breastfeeding for mothers). So let's know, first we will know what happens in IVF? What happens in IVF? When we normally conceive, only one egg or oocyte is produced, but when IVF is done, one egg is not enough. That is why injections of gonadrotrophins are given so that many follicles can be produced. When 10-12 follicles are produced, there are chances of only 8 eggs being retrieved. When they are united with the sperm, only 5-6 of these 8 can be placed in the womb. Sometimes the embryo is transferred on the 3rd day and sometimes on the 5th day, after it grows a little, a blastocyst is formed and transferred. When embryo transfer is done on the 3rd day, the number of these embryos is kept a little more because doctors do not know when these embryos are transferred, how many of those embryos will grow into babies or implantation is not going to happen at all. How are twins conceived in IVF? Because conception depends on many parameters like the receptive quality of the endometrium, the quality of the womb or how the womb is genetically. That is why more than one embryo has to be transferred to increase IVF success. When it comes to blastocyst transfer, the possibility of having twins or triplets is higher due to the enlarged womb. But it can also happen that despite doing two blastocysts, implantation does not happen due to the conditions inside the uterus. When someone wants only one child, then the doctor gives the option of embryo transfer but its success rate will be low. When day 3 embryo is transferred, its success rate is only 15%. Day 5 success rate of transferring a single embryo is 20-25%. Due to transfer of one embryo, the patient may have to repeat the cycle again later. Twin Pregnancy In IVF Talking about twin pregnancy, our uterus is made for only one baby. So if two or three babies are conceived in it, then there are chances of bleeding, miscarriage or preterm birth. There are also chances of the baby being underweight at the time of delivery. When 2 embryos are transferred and one of them gets implanted, then the remaining embryo melts or comes out. Sometimes it also happens that when the first scan is done, two sacs are seen in it, which means there are twins, but sometimes the heartbeat of the baby starts in only one of them and the other remains as it is. Therefore, if two sacs are seen in the first scan, it does not mean that there are twins. Sometimes it also happens that 3 embryos are transferred and all three are fine till the 12th week, but it is very difficult to carry a triplet pregnancy till the end because premature delivery may also be required. So that is why it is very important to know about all these aspects before embryo transfer. Watch the full video for more information.
