The two pads used to press down on the clothes were also made of asbestos, in order to withstand the extreme heat. These pads would often wear out, and the process of removing and replacing them would have involved tearing of the asbestos pads. This would have released asbestos into the air. Related areas of potential exposure include large commercial washers and dryers, which contained asbestos components.
