I'm David Berkman. I have been a New York jazz pianist/composer for well over 30 years. You can also find me in Japan and Europe where I often perform and teach. I have played with legends from Sonny Stitt to Tom Harrell, and my 10 albums as a leader have made many critics "Best" lists. This is my second solo album, following my 2012 critically-acclaimed SELF-PORTRAIT, “These days, records like this may be more worth your time than ever” (The New York Times). This new album is a personal one for me. Some of these songs by John Coltrane and Pete Seeger are among my earliest musical memories and working on them was emotional for me in a way that I hadn’t anticipated. The songs really spoke to each other in surprising ways—I'm so proud of this recording and am extremely enthusiastic about sharing the music with you.   I recorded this album at Essential Sessions Studios in Minneapolis where they embrace a new model (for me)—they help select artists crowdsource their projects. I'll be honest—at first, I had my reservations about pursuing this kind of funding, but because many record companies have become less involved in funding recordings, it’s necessary for musicians to try different approaches.  So, let's try it!
