After the death of Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) (peace be upon him) his kingdom was dismembered. There was virtually the rule of Satan all around. The religious people were mocked at. When the evil reached the saturation point, God sent the Prophet Ilyas (peace be upon him) to reform mankind during the reign of the king Ahab of Israel. He tried his best to save the people from polytheism. He forbade them to worship the Tyrian Bal. He advised the people to ward off evil and worship One God. When his efforts bore no fruit he suddenly appeared before the king and foretold him that severe draught and famine would overtake his kingdom He was sent to the people of Bal back to the west of Damascus. He called them to worship Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, and he stressed upon them that they should give up their idol worship whom they had named Ba'l. Jezebel, along with her husband, instituted the worship of Baal and Asherah on a national scale. As a result, Elijah invited Jezebel's prophets of Baal and Asherah to a challenge at Mount Carmel.[19][21] The challenge was to see which god, Yahweh or Baal, would burn a bull sacrifice on an altar. Jezebel's prophets failed to summon Baal in burning the bull sacrifice, despite their cries and cutting themselves. Elijah, however, succeeded when he summoned Yahweh, impressing the Israelites.
