Policemen carrying away peace activist after arresting him STORYLINE: Palestinian and Israeli activists built a mock Palestinian "outpost" in the West Bank on Saturday to protest Israel's ongoing settlement expansion. Demonstrators set up a small house, complete with a concrete foundation, and raised colourful Palestinian flags, in an area between Jerusalem and the Israeli settlement of Maaleh Adumim, which is located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The fake outpost was meant to draw attention to Israel's continued settlement activity, including the more than 100 settlement outposts that were set up in recent years. Israeli peace activist, Neta Golan explained the purpose of building the house. "Palestinians have built a home behind us on Palestinian land that has been confiscated from Israel as a state land because Israel wants to connect Maaleh Adumim to occupied East Jerusalem in order to annex it." Golan added: "Palestinians are building this home here also because there is a housing shortage because Israel is not allowing Palestinians to build on the land that it controls, only the settlers." About 30 Palestinians, Israelis and foreigners participated in Saturday's protest. One man shovelled concrete around the small house to reinforce it. Others tried to work out how to fit a glass window into its ready-made gap. During the protest, Shmulik Shamir, an Israeli living in nearby Maaleh Adumim carried his country's blue-and-white flag and began arguing with the protesters. Events further intensified as Shamir stood almost nose-to-nose with a Palestinian man, each angrily waving their respective national flags.
