Tempe police provides update on officer-involved shooting

Tempe police officers were involved in a fatal shooting Monday afternoon, according to the department. The incident happened just before 2 p.m. near Rural and Baseline roads. Police say officers were responding to reports of a man in his 40s breaking into a vehicle in the area. During their investigation, police encountered the man in a stairwell nearby. Police say the man "produced a handgun" before an exchange of gunfire between an officer and the man.
