Training a Dog or Puppy to Sit and Stand - Dog Training Using Lures & Positive Reinforcement

In this video, Kristie, a positive reinforcement dog trainer in Glendale, AZ, reviews how to train your dog or puppy to SIT and STAND from the very beginning using luring and incentivizing with rewards. Before training any behavior or cue with your dog, it's imperative that you are crystal clear on what success looks like for the dog. As an example, when you ask a dog to sit, you're asking the dog to put his butt on the ground. The importance of this detail is that with positive reinforcement training, the reward must be delivered at the exact moment the dog completes the behavior for effective dog learning. Thus, when luring a dog into a sit, as soon as her butt hits the ground, you must deliver the reward. When training a stand cue, the reward must be delivered as soon as the dog is back up on all four paws. Ensure you move slowly, capturing the exact behaviors you want via a lure first. Once your dog has built compliance, you can add on the verbal cue and eventually fade out the lure completely. (See A Dogs Learning Journey Video for Effective Dog Learning) You add the verbal cue after the dog has learned the behavior a lure to make sure your do not diminish the value/understanding of the verbal cue. If your dog does not understand the expected behavior, but you repetitively say the cue word, that word becomes "poisoned" and has no meaning or understanding to the dog.
