Then there are those rare moments when Michigan State’s point guard transcends the cadence of the game and bursts into his own genre. His avant-garde rhythms with the ball reach uncharted territory. He becomes a frenetic blend of John Coltrane’s staccato daggers with his shot, MC5’s feverish speed in pushing the pace in transition and Kendrick Lamar’s lyrical fury in attacking the basket off the bounce. That is when Winston morphs into something different, something beyond what people expect, something that few defenses can stop. Something few can describe. “Unbelievable,” was how coach Tom Izzo summed it up Thursday night. His junior’s latest tour stop was at Pinnacle Bank Arena, where Winston scored from every angle in a variety of ways, seizing control early Thursday night and helping the sixth-ranked Spartans finish off Nebraska for a critical 70-64 Big Ten road win. Winston scored a career-high 29 points in a season-high 38 minutes on 9 of 15 shooting, getting baskets in bunches early in the game, late in the first half, in the second-half pull-away stretch and at the free-throw line in the waning moments.
