Impose & Enforce a Screen Curfew

Even though this seems to be mainstream knowledge by now, most people I speak with spend their evenings watching TV or mindlessly scrolling on their social media feeds. The common argument is that this is for “stress relief”, but there are so many other things you can do. You can read a book. Talk with your partner. Journal. Play with your dog. But back to why screens are harmful - smart devices and TVs emit bluelight that send a signal to your body saying that it’s daytime, and to delay the secretion of melatonin and sleep hormones until later. Essentially, your screen is sending a message to your body that says, “Hey - it’s not time to go to bed yet, so don’t get tired.” If you wake up in the night more than once or twice on a regular basis, you’re not getting adequate sleep. If you only sleep 6 hours per night, you’re not getting adequate sleep. This has a negative impact on your muscle growth, weight loss, overall stress, and your hormone levels - not to mention basically every other aspect of your health. The only real solution to this is to implement a screen curfew. Try to stop using screens as soon as it gets dark outside. Say to yourself, “When the sun goes down, I will no longer use screens.” If you absolutely must use a screen, then use a bluelight blocking filter (now standard on most smart devices) or bluelight blocking glasses. Final note: Social media is even worse than a TV. If you are doing an activity that requires your active participation (i.e. scrolling, clicking on links, taking stupid quizzes, reading celebrity gossip), this is preventing relaxation.
