11th Street Multifamily Structure Fire - May 4, 2017

At least 17-people have been displaced from their homes after a late morning, 2-alarm fire at the Summer’s Point Condominiums located in the 200 block of 11th Street. The call for help came in around 11:20 this morning. The first unit arrived on scene in less than 5-minutes of the call and found heavy smoke and flame coming from the roofs of the two end units in one of the condo complex’s two buildings. Within 20-minutes of the first unit’s arrival, a second alarm was called in. Two ladder trucks were used to spray water on the roof of the structure in an effort to beat the fire down so firefighters could make their way inside to begin an offensive attack on the fire. It took well over an hour to get the fire under control. VBFD also sent five engine company’s and a heavy rescue unit to the scene. No one was injured in the fire as most of the residents were not home at the time of the fire. 12-units suffered heavy smoke and fire damage with other adjacent units sustaining mostly water damage and some broken glass. The Red Cross was on scene and working to assist the displaced residents. Two pets were initially reported missing, one dog and one cat. The cat was found late this afternoon hiding under a bed in one of the lesser damaged units. The dog is still missing although some neighbors reported seeing a dog flee the scene this morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Photos by the VBFD Multimedia Services Unit © 2017 - City of Virginia Beach Fire Department. All rights reserved.
