Kindhearted donors have raised more than $132,000 so that a Detroit man who walks 21 miles to work and back every day can buy himself a new car. The plight of James Robertson became widely known on Sunday after the news ran the story about his astonishing 42-mile round-trip daily commute. It emerged that the 56-year-old had been trudging from his home in Detroit to a factory in Rochester Mills, Michigan, every day since 2005 after his Honda Accord quit on him. His $10.55-per-hour wage wasn't enough for him to buy a new vehicle, and public transport was either unreliable or unavailable. So he braved all weather to make the trip, walking through shady neighborhoods, including the 8 Mile area, to get home, before catching some shut eye then starting the day all over again. Robertson said he managed the crazy commute by downing liters of Mountain Dew and Coca Cola. He also "slept a lot" on weekends. But his lifestyle may be about to seriously change after readers of Sunday's article set up a GoFundMe page entitled "Help James Robertson Get a Car," reports MLive. Computer science student Evan Leedy, 19, of Macomb Township, created the campaign after being touched by the story.
