Do Heavier Wheels Cause Slower Acceleration? Let's Find Out!!

Hey Everyone! Welcome back to the channel. In this video, we had the opportunity to find out if a heavier wheel/tire combo makes a difference in the 1/4 mile. Firstly, as a disclaimer, we are both well aware of the science behind Rotational Inertia. We know it's very important to reduce weight as much as possible (especially unsprung weight) when trying to make a vehicle faster. Additionally, we realize that this was not a perfect way to test this concept because of the differences in the tires that were used on the two sets of wheels. That said, this is a very practical test, as many people like to add aftermarket wheels on their vehicles, and most times, those wheels are bigger and heavier than the wheels that came from the factory. Another reason why we feel that this test works well, is because it's being conducted on a vehicle with not a lot of Horse Power and Torque. The added unsprung weight would likely affect a vehicle with low HP/TQ ratings as opposed to a vehicle with a lot of power. The Odyssey has a power to weight that is similar to make compact cars/passenger vehicles that are commonly on the road today, so even though its V6 puts out more HP and TQ than a lot of those vehicles, the overall power to weight is almost the same on average. In this case, the factory wheels that came with the Odyssey were 17" and they have 235/65/17 tires on them, comparing to the 20" wheels that we are comparing to (255/45/20 tires), the winter setup is far lighter, roughly around a 50% decrease in unsprung weight. So despite the tire difference, we figured that this would be a very practical way to test the difference between a lighter and heavier wheel/tire setup. We performed a number of runs with both sets of wheels, with traction control on and off, and we timed them to see if there was a difference or not. All runs were done on the same day, same track, had the same driver and obviously same vehicle, so we tried to make things as controlled as possible.
