How To Find A Parasitic Battery Drain (Easy Explanation!). In this video tutorial I will show you how to find a parasitic battery drain. A parasitic drain occurs when an electrical component draws power even when your car is shut off. Here’s how to find it: • First, unplug all the devices in your vehicle and switch off the radio, A/C, heater, lights, wipers, and other electrical components. Once done, engage the emergency brake, switch off your car, and remove the key from the ignition. • Next, close all the doors and trunks, hook up a charger to your car battery, and charge it to 100%. • After charging, disconnect the negative terminal. • Set your multimeter to amps and connect the black lead to the com port. Use a digital multimeter that can read between 200 milliamps and 20 amps. • Connect the red lead to the negative battery cable and touch the black lead to the negative battery terminal. Let your car sit for 45 minutes so all the computers go into sleep mode. • Note the current reading on your multimeter. If it’s above 50mA, you have a draw. • Locate and remove your car's fuse panel covers. They're under the hood and in the driver's cabin. Please consult your owner's manual to find these panels. Warning: Disconnect your multimeter before opening your door to check the fuses in your car. Additionally, use a scrap wood to clamp the door switch before connecting your multimeter. Doing this protects the multimeter’s fuse and ensures accurate readings. • Remove the fuses, one at a time, and note the readings on your multimeter. A drastic drop means you’ve found the parasitic drain. • Use the chart on the fuse box to determine the component causing the drain and repair it.
