Presider: Fr. Brian Walker, O.P. Parish: Dominican Friars Choir: Heart of the Nation TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A proclamation of the holy gospel according to Saint Mark. Glory to you o Lord. Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she from her poverty, has contributed all she had. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. We have all heard the saying that it is better to give than to receive. I wonder who ever came up with that one? When I was a child, all I knew was that I wanted to get nice gifts at Christmas time. I had proud and wonderful great grandparents and they wanted to do everything they could to spoil their only great grandchild. They made sure I had all the modern toys of the late 50's and I was just so happy. Those words about giving and receiving had no impact on me whatsoever when I was a child. But as I got older, I realized exactly what it meant. When I was able to give gifts I realized how happy I was and how happy it made me to see other people just light up at receiving something all by my actions. I was elated to do something special for someone else. I was able to show them how important they were to me. Later, I began to see that it was my responsibility to be part of something greater. I felt as though I were part of a much bigger picture. In the gospel today we hear how Jesus points out that this one poor widow had given all that she had. She was not giving from her surplus. But she was giving everything. I spent several years in the missions of Mexico and in those years I saw a lot of poverty. I saw a lot of people living on the edge. I was stationed in a small village up in the mountains where there was no running water no electricity, no roads, and of course no forms of communication such as telephones. But at the same time, I have to admit that I saw a lot of happy people. They weren't sad because they didn't have. Most of us would probably say, they didn't know that they didn't have. They freely shared everything that they had with everyone else. They couldn't buy things for others. But they made things that people could use. One may have had the skill to make aprons. Somebody else was able to make all kinds of napkins. They helped one another. So that all could have. Yes, Jesus talks about this widow, who gave all that she had. It's amazing. Sometimes we just need to give of ourselves. One of the things that I love to do is crochet. I love to sew. Make things. And I also love to make things for others. Part of my ministry is making, crocheting and sewing things and then selling them to other people so that they can help out other people who are less fortunate. And all of that goes to help those people in the missions. But also it's giving of myself because I am able to do this with the skill of my own hands. Sometimes that's a lot harder than going to a store and buying a gift card. Give of yourself. Give from the heart. It truly does make a difference. Amen.
