This is a sprint knockout race from start to finish. There are 6 checkpoints and at each checkpoint, 4 racers from the back are knocked out until the end. Think of this as F-Zero SNES races. | This is a fun mode but Grand Prix mode should've kept its 3 lap or so races while this mode focuses on those sprint (or intermissions as called by people) races. | Having Grand Prix be similar to this mode wasn't a good idea by the devs in my opinion.
