Coordinating conjunctions Coordinating conjunctions are used to connect words, phrases, and clauses of equal importance. The most common coordinating conjunctions are "and," "or," "but," "nor," "for," "yet," and "so." For example: "I like pizza, but my friend prefers sushi." "I'm starving, but I don't want to eat yet." "I'm starving." "I don't want to eat yet." equal sentences joined by "but". As you can see these conjunctions help us connect equal ideas together. Coordinating conjunctions are also known as the "FANBOYS". What are FANBOYS you might ask? FANBOYS are the conjunctions that connect words, phrases, or clauses of equal syntactic importance. And what do the letters in FANBOYS stand for? F- For, A- And, N- Nor, B- But, O- Or, Y- Yet, S- So. So, let's use these FANBOYS to connect some things together. For example: "I'm starving, but I don't want to eat yet." "She wants to go to the park and play some football." "He can't swim nor can he dive." "I'll either go to the movies or stay at home." As you can see, FANBOYS help us connect equal ideas together. So, next time you're writing a sentence and want to connect two equal ideas, just remember your FANBOYS and you'll be good to go!
