Intelligent Systems had already worked closely with Nintendo since the NES era, creating exclusive titles such as "Fire Emblem" and "Wars." The unique graphic style created by art director Naohiko Aoyama made such a strong impression that the entire game was dubbed "Paper Mario" in the West, while in Japan it had the more neutral name "Mario Story." The first title in the series was released on August 11, 2000, for the Nintendo 64 and was so well received by critics that work quickly began on a GameCube sequel. Ryota Kawade returned as director, and the new identity as the Paper Mario series was fully embraced, as evidenced by the fact that the Japanese name now also included the title ("Paper Mario RPG"). The game was finally released in Europe on November 12, 2004. Paper Mario: Legend of the Aeon Gate was ultimately so well received that director Ryota Kawade—possibly because he had perfected the system of turn-based battles, a leveling system, partners, and a gripping story that had defined the series up to that point, to the point where he had no further ideas for improvements—sought to create an entirely new game concept. Together with producer Kensuke Tanabe, he came up with the idea of taking "Super Paper Mario" in a completely different direction while retaining the popular RPG elements. Unlike the sequel "Paper Mario: Sticker Star" for the 3DS, the previous chief director, Ryota Kawade, had stepped down from the game, prompting the previous art director, Naohiko Aoyama, to take his place. After Miyamoto, who tested the game and felt it was too similar to Paper Mario 2, criticized the game and asked the development team to use largely unchanged characters from the Mario universe and reconsider the need for a plot, changes were necessary. The story was reduced to a minimum, RPG elements such as the level system were removed, along with the partners who apparently didn't mesh well with the sticker mechanics, and all Mario characters were given a generic appearance. This decision was not well received by many fans, as it meant Paper Mario lost its identity. Accordingly, many fans were outraged when the sequel, "Paper Mario: Color Splash," for the Wii U, was announced in 2016 as an action-adventure game rather than an RPG. Mechanically, the game was extremely similar to Sticker Star and offered only a few improvements in the plot and combat. Producer Kensuke Tanabe, eager to address the criticism, designed a new, ring-based combat system with Risa Tabata, in which Mario must first study his enemies and choose the right path to defeat bosses. This resulted in "Paper Mario: The Origami King," which was released for Nintendo Switch on July 17, 2020. In addition to the new elements, Tanabe also created a coherent world instead of individual level sections and brought back the popular partners and badges from the first installments, albeit with some modifications. A leveling system and other stats, with the exception of HP, were still not included in order to do justice to the game's status as an action-adventure game.
