Presider: Fr. Mark Payne Parish: Chaplain, Heart of the Nation Choir: Thelen Family Choir TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to john. Glory to you o Lord. On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy spirit whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins are retained are retained." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Today as we celebrate this wonderful feast day of the Pentecost I want you to think of something. I want you to think of Easter. There we were on Easter, peering into the empty tomb. In wonderment. What happened. Even Mary Magdalene when she's searching for the body of Jesus she doesn't fully understand and neither did the disciples. That's where we find them today. They're in that upper room and they're frightened. They're hiding. Why? They don't know what's going to happen? And all of a sudden Jesus appears. Now he appears to them and they are overjoyed upon his appearance but they're still a bit afraid because they're in that locked room. We're just like the disciples and for some of us we'd like to lock ourselves in an upper room. And hope that all of this would all go away. Well folks it's not going to. Jesus knew that when he breathed upon his disciples he breathed that new life to say no, we're not staying in a locked room and neither are we. We're going to live our lives in a world that needs to hear a message of hope. A message that turns our lives into living, living wonderment for God. Why do I say that? Because we can be that smile. We can be that message of hope. We can be the persons that we are called to be even in that second reading. Each of us have been given gifts! Use your gifts! If your gift is to proclaim good news, then go proclaim it. If it is meant to be a catechist, go be a catechist. If it is meant to bring communion to those who are shut in, who can't get out bring the Lord Jesus to them. You see that's the message today. We're not going to stay behind those closed doors. Maybe it's important to be aware of the news but not get overwhelmed by it. To be aware that we are in a world that needs that hope and we are that hope. That's why Jesus sends us forth as he sends his disciples. So today as we celebrate this Pentecost feast go forth. Bring a message of hope to those around you and realize no longer do we have to live in fear but we need to live in joy. That God is truly with us.
