I saw this bus blatantly cross the ASL into the 'cycle box', while the lights were on red, so thought I'd ask him to stay out of the box. He - very politely - informs me that if I check the highway code, I would find that the box was a 'cycle and bus advance lane'. As funny (and polite) as this exchange is, the ASL is there to stop cyclists being squashed by things such as buses, so for a driver to think he has a right to be in the cycle box is serious. I blurred the face as the driver was polite and needs re-educating, not vilifying. Be nice. Transcript: Me: "Stay out the box mate" Driver: "Huh?" Me: "Can you stop at the first line." Driver: "If you check the highway code, sir, it will say that it is a cycle and bus advance lane" Me: "No it wouldn't" Driver: "It would" Me: "It wouldn't" Driver: "It would" Highway code #178 (https://www.gov.uk/using-the-road-159...) reads: Advanced stop lines. Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic. Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked. If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area. Allow cyclists time and space to move off when the green signal shows. Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10, 36(1) & 43(2)
