For this ambition, the Emperor transformed the small port of Boulogne-sur-Mer into a gigantic fortress housing 150,000 soldiers. To ensure a successful landing, he sought to draw the British naval forces away from the English Channel. After several failed attempts to lure Collingwood and Nelson's fleets to the West Indies, Admiral de Villeneuve allowed himself to be trapped off Cádiz, near Cape Trafalgar, hoping to draw the British there. But he soon received a counter-order and was forced to move to the Mediterranean. Two days after leaving the harbor on October 21, 1805, the French ships commanded by Villeneuve were intercepted by twenty-seven British vessels led by the flamboyant Admiral Nelson... A gripping military and human story, a confrontation between two admirals who were complete opposites. 👉 Also see on Our History: Napoleon, Surviving to Reign: How Did He Build His Legend?    • Napoléon, survivre pour régner : Comment a...   Lucien Bonaparte: The Brother Who Defied Napoleon    • Le frère rebelle de l’Empereur Napoléon : ...   Napoleon: From Rise to Fall - Let Yourself Be Guided    • Napoléon : De l’ascension au déclin - Lais...   Napoleon, the Dream of Conquest - Battle of Trafalgar    • Video   👉 Discover our playlist dedicated to portraits of those who shape history    • PORTRAITS : ILS FONT L'HISTOIRE   Trafalgar Director: Fabrice Hourlier Writers: Marc Eisenchteter, Fabrice Hourlier Producers: ARTE FRANCE, MEDIA VIDEO COMPANY ©ARTE #Trafalgar #Napoleon #Nelson #History #HistoricalDocumentary #NavalBattle #NapoleonicWars #Navy #RoyalNavy #MilitaryHistory #Cadiz #BoulogneSurMer
