Until recently, mothers like Chantal had to carry their children on their backs while harvesting tea. But today, Rwanda's tea companies are investing in early childhood development centres. Through a partnership with UNICEF and the Government, children up to 6 years can now play and learn in a safe and stimulating space while their parents work to earn an income. More than 60% of tea plantation workers are women. Now they have flexible working hours, and they use the centre to breastfeed so their babies get the nutrition they need for healthy brain development. Some women report they are even able to pick up to 3 times more tea.
