The Russian president Vladimir Putin arrives in Istanbul on Tuesday. He and his Turkish counterpart have plenty to discuss, including the conflicts in Libya and Syria. As far as Syria is concerned, Recep Tayyip Erdogan's most immediate challenge is to prevent an all-out assault on Idlib province which shares a border with Turkey. Even without a full offensive, a new bombing campaign by Russia and the regime has affected 100s of thousands of civilians. One possibly safety net is the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army.
