Uttar Pradesh has informed the Supreme Court that it has a total of 2,200 basic life support ambulances in addition to 250 advanced life support ambulances. The submission was made in the affidavit filed by the State government in its appeal against a suo motu Allahabad High Court order describing the healthcare system in rural Uttar Pradesh as "Ram bharose" (at God's mercy). The Supreme Court had earlier stayed this May 18 order passed by the High Court. While doing so, it had refused to accept a prayer by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to have only benches led by Chief Justices of High Courts hear COVID-19 related cases. The Court had appointed Senior Advocate Nidhesh Gupta as an amicus curiae and listed the case for hearing today.
