Most games come and go, attached to their hardware generation while others go on to become something else, something transcending History, and the World, a tale of souls and swords... oh wait, that's "SoulCalibur"! Regardless even at the genesis of the series, the original "Soul Blade" ("Soul Edge" in Japan) is an absolutely remarkable video game that moved away from Namco's more traditional "Tekken" in favor of weapon based combat. Unlike in future versions of the game, weapons here brake and you can end up having to resort to fists and feet to fight your opponent. The ability to freely move in the 3D scenarios also meant you could trick your opponent and win by ring out or vice versa, making a mistake and ending up being yourself thrown outside. This made multiplayer a lot of fun and frantic but the single player was not left unpolished: every fighter has its own unique interactive ending, with your actions in the end deciding if you get the good or he bad ending. Edge Master Mode and a lot of unlockable weapons made sure this was one of my most played games of all time on my Playstation. Enjoy a arcade mode run with old favorite Mitsurugi.
