이태원 사고 5일째, 서울광장에 이어지는 추모 발걸음... 이태원역 1번 출구 "자원봉사자와 시민이 관리" South Korea is observing a national period of mourning for the victims of last weekend's crowd crush in Itaewon. This period runs through Saturday. We go live to our Lee Kyung-eun who's standing at one of the memorial altars set up in downtown Seoul. Kyung-eun, tell us what you've seen today as people come to pay their respects to the dead. Devin. This area is filled with silence and grief. Our team has been here since the morning... Despite the chilly weather, a lot of people have been coming to pay their respects. And we are expecting more people... in the next few hours... since today and tomorrow are the last two days that these memorial altars will be open. President Yoon Suk-yeol also came today for the fifth day in a row. And now, the altar has been completely filled with flowers,... letters and food. The mourners are of all ages and nationalities,... and have included five minister-level government officials. "I hope the deceased can have a better, happier existence,... at peace now." "I myself often go to Itaewon, so I feel closely linked to the tragedy. I came here on my way to work." "Our thoughts and our feelings in Thailand are deep sorrow. I can say that on behalf of the Thai government, which I am a part of, and on behalf of the Thai people, we hope that Korea, particularly Korean youth will rise up, stand up and walk ahead." "Sri Lanka being a friend of South Korea, we express our deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones." Kyung-eun, there continues to be an outpouring of grief at sites like that across the country. How are people paying respect elsewhere? That's right. A total of 25 memorial altars have been set up in Seoul... and many more in other regions. These are the official sites run by local governments. But there are also memorial altars set up voluntarily by the people. Including in Itaewon -- where the accident occurred. In front of Itaewon Station,.. we see lines of flowers, food, drinks, letters and more -- left in remembrance of those who died -- mostly young people in their twenties. Thousands of people come and go, and there are no government officials in charge of the site. But things are kept clean -- thanks to citizens and volunteers who are taking those roles. People have also set up memorial altars on university campuses... as well as at the National Assembly.
