Between India and Pakistan – The Sikh Dilemma | DW Documentary Hindi

20.01.2020 - Relations between India and Pakistan have always been strained, but there's at least one area where some hope is emerging. A "peace corridor" has been opened between the two countries to enable Indian Sikhs to perform pilgrimages to one of their holiest sites. Sikhs are the fourth largest religious community in India, but they find themselves caught between the India-Pakistan and Hindu-Muslim divides. India has the largest population of Sikhs in the world. The bitterness between India and Pakistan since Partition in 1947 prevented Sikhs from visiting their holiest shrines for decades. Despite the ongoing political tensions between the two countries, particularly over Kashmir, 74 years after Partition, India and Pakistan have fulfilled a promise made two decades ago. On the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, Indian Sikhs will be able to travel to Guru Nanak's shrine in Kartarpur, Pakistan, four kilometers from the border, via a new road built across the border. The Prime Ministers of both countries inaugurated the Kartarpur Corridor as scheduled, but not in a joint ceremony. Both spoke of a new "peace corridor." The corridor was inaugurated on November 9, 2019. It's no coincidence that this date also marks the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi even compared the two historic occasions. This documentary tells the story of an Indian Sikh traveling to Pakistan for the first time on a very special pilgrimage. #DWDocumentaryHindi #DWHindi #Poverty #Refugees ------------------------------------------------ If you liked the video and want to see more such interesting videos, don't forget to subscribe.
