First Permit Hookup out of Thatch Caye Belize

On my 2nd guided day out of Thatch Caye, we caught and landed a nice Tarpon and then hooked my first Permit. It was gently released at a distance. However, this being only my 4th day fishing for Permit, a shot at landing a “Flats Fly Fishing Grand Slam” was dependent on landing this Permit at the boat. With a Tarpon already caught and released, only a Bonefish needed be caught. And we would have tracked down and caught the needed Bonefish come hell or high water. Given that schools of Bones seemed to be resident at every pier in Belize, and the fact that they were easy to catch, I was already envisioning a triumphant but low key return to the lodge with the Grand Slam in the bag. By all accounts, Permit fishing is never that easy.
