(6 Feb 2018) The US on Tuesday suggested North Korea has been on a "charm offensive" while on the other hand continuing its internationally condemned nuclear and missile programmes. The US Ambassador to a UN Conference on Disarmament, Robert Wood, on Tuesday told fellow diplomats in Geneva that "the situation on the Korean Peninsula has not changed". "The entire world can see through it", Wood said after the session. Ju Yong Chol, counselor at North Korea's mission to the UN, told the conference that the UN "should not turn a blind eye to the US' dangerous game of aggravating the situation". "The international community should also be highly alert to the US ambition to put the whole world under its control based on 'America First' doctrine", he said. The spat comes as the two Koreas are cooperating for a series of conciliatory measures during the Winter Olympics, which Seoul sees as an opportunity to ease tensions with the North following an extended period of animosity and diplomatic stalemate over Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.
