First Reading Reading from the Book of Isaiah (49:3, 5-6): The Lord said to me: "You are my servant, Israel, through you I will be glorified." And now the Lord, who formed me from the womb as his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, to gather Israel to him, has declared, I am glorified in the sight of God. And my God was my strength: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the survivors of Israel. This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is greater than me, for he was before me.’ I did not know him, yet I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and remaining on him.
