ABC's 'Jerry Lewis Show' (1963) was a spectacular flop, cancelled after a half season. The network had purchased the El Capitan theatre and renovated it for Lewis, so they changed the name to 'Hollywood Palace' and they had the venue for a new high-budget variety series. Many prominent stars served as host-of-the-week and the acts included musicians, acrobats, singers, comics, and more. It ran for 182 episodes. The theme was 'Put On a Happy Face' from 'Bye Bye Birdie' (Lee Adams and Charles Strouse). Les Brown was music director in the first year, Mitchell Ayres took over in season two. Ayres was in Las Vegas to conduct for Connie Stevens when he was struck by a car and killed. Nick Perito took over for the seventh and final season. 00:00 Opening titles, season one.
